Today, April 2nd, is the fifth annual World Autism Awareness Day. For that reason, I am dedicating this post to Autism Awareness and resources.
These resources barely scratch the surface for Autism resources and support. If you have additional resources to suggest, please share here.
Personal and news stories, national and local:
April 2, 2012: CNN : With autism, no longer invisible
This story highlights Joseph Sheppard, an autistic man who is working on autism research. He was diagnosed in adulthood with high-functioning autism. This has led him to an understanding of himself that has helped him become a inspirational leader who is “giving voice to people with autism.”
April 2, 2012: Duluth News Tribune: A Duluth mother’s story: Loving Nora, a child with Asperger’s
Parents of special needs children, whatever the diagnosis, often struggle with the way the world perceives them without knowing the full story. Moriah Erickson, the mother of a three year old with Asperger’s syndrom paints a picture of life as the mother of a truly exceptional girl. Moriah’s candid point of view is a testament to openness of sharing a window into the life of family dealing with autism.
