Day 230 of 366: 13 MUST HAVE Apps for a Staff iPad Deployment

I was asked by Jon Lustic, @gistul, Technology Director – Saint Peter Public Schools, Saint Peter, MN the following question on Twitter:

I’m looking for 5-10 free must include apps for a staff iPad deployment – any tips…Notes, Educreations, Nearpod, Socrates…TIA

These were my first reactions to his request.

@gitsul dropbox, nearpod student & teacher, educreations, creative book builder, PDF writer like paperport notes, i-nigima, iBooks, iTunes U

@gitsul word processing/presentation that fits your existing system: pages, office hd(?), Socrative, Rover, Twitter, iMovie

So, apparently my short list is as follows, in no specific order…

  1. Dropbox
  2. Nearpod Student and Teacher
  3. Educreations
  4. Creative Book Builder
  5. A PDF writer (like PaperPort Notes)
  6. A QR code Reader. I haven’t found one as sensitive as i-nigma. Even if it is an iPod app.
  7. iBooks
  8. iTunes U
  9. A word processing and presentation App (Pages/Keynote / Office HD (?))
  10. Socrative (teacher and student)
  11. Rover browser
  12. Twitter
  13. iMovie

What would be on your top 10? Or, your top 13, as my list turned out to be?

    Are you familiar at all with CloudOn? It is an app that gives you a virtual MS Office workspace. We haven’t used it with students or staff yet, since we are just rolling out iPads to staff for the first time in September, but it appears to work pretty well in my limited experience. I just downloaded Pages, too, but haven’t had much time to play with it yet.

  2. I did you CloudOn when it was first released. Honestly, I don’t use my iPad to word process. I type in Notes and format on my computer. But, people often get their iPad and ask for a word processor. Choosing the right one for your district really depends on your platform, your participation in Google Docs and so many other factors.
