On my Facebook Feed, I saw someone share the theme of the latest AchieveMlps Edtalks on one of the hard-to-describe topics that is close to my heart: The Opportunity Gap.
What is AchieveMpls EDTalks? According to their website at https://www.achievempls.org/edtalks, the Edtalks are:
Lively conversations about issues impacting public education and our young people
EDTalks features two compelling 20-minute presentations by cutting-edge educators, youth advocates, journalists, artists, policy-makers and others, with ample time for conversation and networking
The first one that I have watched is Engaged Learning Through Experiential Education by Jenny Wright Collins, Executive Director at Beacons Leadership.
Some of the striking lines from her talk:
“We told them that they were important. We told them their voice mattered… You have a light you need to shine, and we need it.”
Her talk focuses not on the fact that the Opportunity Gap is in the community and environment, not within the “young people” themselves.
Take 21 minutes minutes to watch this Talk. Go back and watch the others at https://www.achievempls.org/edtalks
Be inspired!
In what ways have you seen the opportunity gap affect the students and families in your school or community?
