Day 246 of 366: I can still impress a young digital-native (retro-posted from 9/3)

This Sunday, while eating in a pizza restaurant in the very northern part of Minnesota, I had internet connection for the first time in a couple of days. I checked Facebook and Twitter, but not much had happened. I didn’t take time to post a blog post, either. Honestly, it was nice to take a couple of days off from blogging. After a quarter of a thousand dates, a few nights off were well deserved.

I will admit that I plugged back in as soon as I had 3G. While eating our pizza, my nephew looked up at the decor on the wall. There was a game hanging near the ceiling called HandsDown. The box was old, yet the game looked intriguing. The ten year old had grown up with technology, at least the same as an average kid, I believe.  As he wondered out loud how the game was played, I pulled out my trusting iPhone. In seconds, I had pulled out the rules and passed them to him.

His ten year old eyes looked up at me, actually impressed. “How’d you do that?” he asked.

Having basically unlimited access to information is overwhelming and exciting. I can’t wait to see how much technology in the classroom can transform the endless question for information. I can’t wait for the hurdles to be leaped so that all children can find the answer to their questions as readily as I found the rules to Hands Down.

What is the strangest fact or tidbit of information you’ve looked up on the spur of the moment?
